How Roofers Install a Roof
Installing a roof is not as easy as nailing shingles together. There are multiple parts to a roofing system that roofers need to be familiar with handling and installing. This video explains how roofers install a basic asphalt composition shingle roof.
The first thing to do is install a drip edge on the eaves of the roof. The edges are the most vulnerable part of the roof when it comes to leaks and water damage, and the drip edge helps maintain good drainage. The drip edge is cut and bent to perfectly fit the edges of the roof, and nails are installed every 12 to 16 inches to keep it secure.
Next is the felt, which is a protective underlayment that helps keep heat and cooling in the home and prevents water from getting in. Rolls of felt are rolled out and then shot down with plastic caps. They are installed on both sides there is an additional layer that overlaps and covers the crest of the roof.
Finally, the starter strip and shingles are installed. The starter strip offers another layer of protection for the edges of the roof, and the shingles are installed in an overlapping pattern for full coverage.
