It may seem like a no-brainer to turn off the water before working on a repair or installation. Yet, you would be surprised how many plumbers forget to turn that valve.
Before you do anything else, turn the valve to shut off the water. In fact, simply turn off all the water if you are unsure. It is better to be safe than sorry with soggy socks.
Another mistake you will regret is taping Teflon tape onto the fitting the wrong way. Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way to do this. If you wrap the tape around counterclockwise, it makes it easy for the tape and fitting to come undone on their own. This can result in a sudden leak when you are not expecting it. Instead, make sure to wrap that Teflon tape clockwise.
