Why Do People Move?
If you are preparing to move house, you’re not alone. Millions of people move each year, for various reasons. Whether it’s for a new job, to be closer to family, or just because they’ve finally found the dream home they’ve always wanted, there are some things they have in common. Whatever the reason, it’s always easier to pack up and go when you can get professional movers to do the heavy lifting for you.
Why do people move?
“One who keeps tearing around, and one who can’t move.” As the Stephen Sondheim song Send in the Clowns says, there are two kinds of people – those who move all the time and those who never do. In general, people who move frequently tend to be younger. In fact, about one third of all people in their twenties move in any given year. This is the time when they’re going to college, looking for work, and searching for the right place to call home.
Also, people with a college education tend to move often than those with a high school diploma. About 77% of those with a college education are more likely to move at least once in their lives. They’re also more likely to move more often and to have lived in many different states. For those with a high school certificate, just over half or 56% are likely to move at least once in their lives.
Follow your heart
Most moves happen in the summer, with nearly half happening between May 1st and Labor Day. This suggests that people move when school’s out, to make the transition easier for the kids. About 42% of all moves are for personal reasons – to be close to family as parents get older, for better schools for children, or just because they’ve always wanted to live near the sea. Another 40% of all moves are work-related, and 18% are relocations for government jobs.
The reason why the restless ones move may be because they’re trying to finally make their homes where their hearts are. It’s a work in progress. About 23% of all adults feel that they’re not living in their “home in the heart” at the present time. It gets even harder to connect home and heart if you’ve lived in more than one place in your life. As many as 38% of those who have lived in more than two locations feel that they’re not living their “heart homes”.
Moving to a new home
About 43 million people, a substantial chunk of the population, move in any given year. That’s a large number of people on the road. Many people like to DIY, with friends to help them load up the truck and to drive themselves and their belongings to their new homes. But if you have a lot of stuff, or are moving with kids and pets, it’s a lot easier and less stressful to get moving help, and to take it easy on yourself.
When you have professional movers to handle the heavy lifting, you can treat the whole thing as an adventure. Of course, professional movers will do much more than just the heavy lifting. They will also pack your stuff for you, handling your valuable and fragile belongings with the care they need. Many movers will also unpack for you, so your new home is set up without too much effort on your part.
Moving house can be an adventure. It’s a chance to see new places, meet new people, find new jobs and new schools. Millions of people move each year for all of these reasons. Perhaps the most important reason why people move is that they’re just looking for a place to call home, for a long, long time.
