What To Wear For Your Family Portrait? Something That Expresses Your Personality!
The family portrait is not what it used to be.
When I was a kid, my grandma used to get the whole family together once a year for portrait day. She was a very stern woman, so there was absolutely no messing around whatsoever on picture day. She chose our clothes for us, picked out the photographer, and told us what time to be where. We had no say when it came to family picture outfit ideas.
Needless to say, I grew up to be a photographer. I can see the times have changed most vividly when I am approached by clients with some of their family picture outfit ideas. Oh lord, you should see some of the funny holiday pictures I have in my portfolio. I have taken family portraits that would have made my grandma faint in a second.
Personally, I love awkward family pictures. I think that the most embarrassing family photos can sometimes be the most honest. I mean, come on, lets face it…families are always a little awkward by nature, are they not?
Why should our family picture outfit ideas not reflect that? I happen to feel as if we should embrace our imperfections and laugh at them instead of acting like we are always turtle neck wearing, straight edge good Samaritans.
One of my favorite family picture outfit ideas I have ever been approached with came from this fun little family in Oregon. They wanted me to do a series of awkward family Christmas photos for their Christmas postcards to send out. They all went out to Goodwill and Salvation Army.
They shopped around for a good two weeks, looking for the ugliest Christmas sweaters they could possibly find. And, believe me, they definitely did find them, alright. The three of them clashed so beautifully in bursts of gaudy blues and greens and reds and reindeer patterns.
I love getting family picture outfit ideas like this because it makes the whole shoot fun and more natural. When someone comes to me with family picture outfit ideas that stray from the norm, I cannot hold back a smile, because I know we will all have a great time expressing ourselves together. That is what life is all about.
