People obviously move for a variety of reasons. In some cases, it’s to attend college or to be closer to a new job. Other reasons for moving include being closer to family and friends or when becoming a first-time homeowner.

College students and graduates tend to move quite a bit. By the time they graduate, a recent survey showed that 77% will have moved from one community to another at least once. Approximately 56% of people with a high school diploma or less, however, will have changed communities a minimum of one time.

It’s also more likely that college graduates will have lived in more than one state. They may, for example, move away from their home town or state to earn an undergraduate degree, and then move to another area or state to earn a graduate degree. After completing their education, many individuals will then move to another area to begin a career.

Even though college graduates tend to move quite often, a large number of Americans never move away from their hometowns. In fact, these individuals prefer to live close to their extended family, many of whom only live an hour away. A recent survey showed that 37% of adults have never moved out of their hometown, while 63% will have moved to a new area at least once during their life.

While 57% of American adults haven’t moved outside their home state, 15% have lived in four states or even more. While the average American moves around 12 times in their life, 33% of renters move every year.

Sometimes, people need to move to another area for work or due to family obligations. In many cases, approximately 23%, they’re not living in an area that feels like home. The survey participants that had already lived in two or more areas stated that they weren’t living in their “heart home” now, either. This was true for 38% of the participants.

When it’s time to move, there are quite a few items that need to be crossed off a things-to-do list. Many people may choose to downsize prior to moving, while others downsize after they move. Once they’ve decided what to keep and what to donate to a local non-profit, they need to pack up all their belongings before moving to a new house or apartment.

Another important item on a mover’s to-do list is submitting a change of address form. This needs to be submitted two weeks prior to a move so that it is processed in time. The last thing someone wants is to have important mail or packages go missing because they’re sent to an old address.

One of the items at the top of a mover’s to-do list is searching through moving companies to find just the right residential moving company. When people are too busy to pack or want to make sure their fragile items and other belongings are packed correctly, a residential moving service can take care of this for them.

Another important item on a moving to-do list is determining actual moving costs. While these may vary due to what is being moved and how far, the American Moving and Storage Association states that the average cost of moving within the same state is $1,170.

Moving companies make relocating considerably easier. Furthermore, once people are in their new home or apartment, they may decide to purchase new furniture. Moving companies can pick up and deliver these purchases as well.

Another important thing to know about moving companies is that they offer storage facilities, too. This can make a major difference when an individuals or family’s belongings exceed their home’s storage space. This can also be helpful when needing to move out of one home before the next one is available.

When people move for college, a new job, to be closer to family or because they have finally found their heart home, hiring professional movers can make the process simpler and more efficient.
